Can You Eat Your Way To Healthier Teeth?

We’ve all heard a diet high in citric acid or processed sugars, is bad for our teeth—but what foods support healthy teeth and gums? There are many foods that help to promote healthy levels of bacteria, and that deliver the vitamins and nutrients your teeth really need. Make a conscious effort to add more of these foods and beverages to your diet.

Calcium-Rich Foods

Calcium helps to maintain and restore your teeth’s protective layer, the enamel. Aim to consume at least 2 to 3 servicing of calcium-rich foods each and every day. This includes cheese, milk, eggs, and calcium supplements.

Vitamin D

In order to properly absorb calcium, you must also consume a healthy level of vitamin D. fish and eggs are both an excellent source, but 10 minutes a day in direct sunlight can do the trick too. It doesn’t even have to be warm, or super sunny!

Polyphenol-Rich Foods

Foods and beverages containing polyphenols compounds help to slow the growth of cavity-causing bacteria. This includes green tea, black tea, flaxseed meal, cloves, and oregano.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. It also helps to produce gum-healthy collagen. If you have inflamed gums, kick your vitamin C intake up a notch. Citrus, red peppers, kale, and broccoli are all excellent sources of vitamin C.

Crisp And Crunchy Foods

While chewing, hard candies increase your risk for chipped or broken teeth, eating crisp and crunchy foods works as a mid-day, all-natural method of controlling dental plaque. Think crisp vegetables, such as carrots, celery, apples, and cucumber.

Water

Water and herbal teas really should be your primary source of hydration. Sipping coffee all day expose your tooth enamel to acid, and if it has flavoring—also to sugar. Water flushes away pesky food particles and is packed full of plaque-busting minerals. Or at least switch to a sugar-free green or black tea.
